Untitled-2BY HIRAN PRIYANKARA Former president Mahinda Rajapaksa said on Saturday that the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) which he headed until 2015, when he lost the Presidential Election, was forcibly taken away from him by his successor as President — Maithripala Sirisena.

Addressing a public meeting in Anamaduwa, the former president and Kurunegala District MP said he did not offer the leadership of the party to anyone at any time. He said President Sirisena had convened a separate convention of SLFP members at which a new Central Committee was elected in an attempt to destroy the party. “He keeps asking me to leave, saying I have lost twice. But he is the only SLFP president who lost his own electorate at a Parliamentary Election. I did not lose twice. I lost only once,” he said. He requested the government to protect the souls of the general public who elected the government.
