s5BY T. FAROOK THAJUDEEN Colombo High Court Judge Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne yesterday allowed Venerable Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera to go to UK to attend a religious ceremony that would be held at the Saddatissa International Centre in UK from September 2 to 7.

He was also directed to hand over his passport in court on September 13 after his return from UK. The Judge took this decision to release the passport to Venerable Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera after considering the submission of Senior State Counsel Janaka Bandara, who was asked by the Judge to inform court over the stance of the Attorney General (AG) on releasing the passport to the monk to go to the UK. The Court had restrained the monk from going abroad and took his passport to the court’s custody in the case filed by the Wildlife Department for allegedly keeping a two-and-half-year-old elephant calf at the Alanmathiyarama Temple in Polhengoda Kirulapone on January 28, 2015. The AG had indicted Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera on two counts for allegedly possessing the baby elephant without a valid licence under section 22 (12) of the Fauna and Flora Protection (Amendment) Act, No.22 of 2009 and Section 5(3) (a) of the Public Property Act.
