BY INDIKA MANOJ AND KUSAL CHAMATH Residents of Moratuwa and its surrounding areas are concerned about the dilapidated condition of the Weera Puranappu playground which has been left to the mercy of the shrub jungle for a long time. The residents lamented that continual representations to the Moratuwa Municipal Council in this regard fell on the deaf ear. Meanwhile, Priyantha Wijesinghe (45), a resident of the area, said the abandoned playground was a safe haven for prostitutes, drug addicts and other individuals engaging in nefarious activities much to the annoyance of the public.

Meanwhile, a former member of the Municipal Council stated that he raised the matter at council meetings and requested to restore and maintain the playground without wasting public property in this manner, but to no avail. He said there was nothing that could be done in his capacity until the new council was elected. Residents of the area requested the Moratuwa Municipal Council to repair and maintain the playground which was a much needed facility in the area.
