BY T. FAROOK THAJUDEEN Parliamentarian Hirunika Premachandra and seven other accused were released on bail yesterday by the Colombo High Court in an alleged case of abduction of a youth at Dematagoda last year.
They were alleged to have involvement in the abduction of a youth using a Defender belonging to MP Hirunika Premachandra on December 21, 2015
Ms. Premachandra and the other accused were released on a cash bail of Rs. 50,000 with two sureties for Rs 500,000 each. The suspects were also warned not to interfere with the prosecution witnesses Trial was fixed for January 10 and 11 next year. The Attorney General had filed indictments against the accused in the Colombo High Court and the accused appeared before the High Court on summons issued on them to appear before Court yesterday. The Attorney General had indicted Hirunika Premachandra and the others who were her personal body guards and supporters. They were alleged to have involvement in the abduction of a youth using a Defender belonging to MP Hirunika Premachandra on December 21, 2015.
The eight accused Hirunika Premachandra, Kelum Niranjana, Kasun Malinda, Ruwan Pushpakumara, Mohammed Rizwan, Pasindu Sanjeewa, P.S. Abeysiriwardena and Jegan had been charged on 29 counts including threatening, assaulting and intimidating the victim Amila Priyankara after being abducted in Dematagoda. The complainant Amila Priyankara alleged that he was abducted and assaulted by a group of people who came in a black Defender to Dematagoda on December 21, 2015..
