Topples seed number two

Teenage sensation Anika Seneviratne continued her excellent form to topple seed number two Risa Fokutoku of Japan and entered the semifinals of the Girls Under-18 singles in the ITF Junior Tennis Tournament which continued at the Sri Lanka Tennis Association (SLTA) Courts in Green Path yesterday.

The promising Seneviratne took her opportunities and attacked her Japanese opponent and earned a hard fought 6-4, 6-4, straight set victory in a match which lasted for over two and a half hours. Meanwhile, in the Boys singles event, Avindra Perera the only other Sri Lankan left in the tournament lost to the fourth seed Christian Didier Chin of Malaysia 4-6, 6-3, 4-6 in a gruelling encounter which lasted for over three hours following a closely fought contest. Avindra could have won this match but unfortunately made too many unforced errors against his more experienced opponent. The tournament continues today at the SLTA courts.
