BY THARINDU JAYAWARDENE The CID was seeking advice from the Attorney General to arrest a senior police officer who had allowed the release of a suspect who had been in custody for the killing of schoolgirl Sivayoganathan Vidya in Jaffna, the sources said.

According to sources, the investigations conducted by the CID revealed that the said officer had instructed the Jaffna Police to release the suspect who had allegedly killed the student after sexually abusing her. After the villagers had captured the suspect and tied him to a tree, a Sub- Inspector and Constable of the Jaffna Police had escorted him to the station. Later, the said police officer had advised them to release the suspect after recording a statement saying he was assaulted by the villagers. The outraged villagers had then protested over the release of the suspect and also pelted stones at the police station and the Jaffna Magistrate’s Court. However, the suspect was subsequently taken into custody while he was remaining in discrete in Wellawatte. The CID had forwarded the extracts of the investigation to the AG for instructions, department sources said.
