The Dialog Inter-Club League Rugby Tournament for 2016/17 season will commence with Sri Lanka Police Sports Club taking on Sri Lanka Navy Sports Club in the opening game at the Police Park in Colombo commencing at 4 p.m today (4). Navy SC and Police SC were placed fourth and fifth respectively during the last league tournament and would look to start their campaign with a victory, so as to have a better finish this time around. The Sailors were able to beat their opponents in last seasons’ league firstround match but the Cops got the better of them in the second-round match played at the Police Park. The two teams also met in the quarter-final fixture of the Dialog Clifford Cup Tournament last season, which saw Navy SC walk away victoriously. Navy SC are under the wings of Coach Mothilal Jayathilaka, who guided his team to a top-four finish last season while Police SC will be under the guidance of Sudath Sampath. The rugby action is set to continue during the weekend as well which would see the defending champions Kandy SC take on CH and FC at Nittawela while Air Force SC will confront last seasons’ runners-up Havelocks SC at Ratmalana on Saturday (5). In addition, Army SC will play CR and FC at the Race Course Grounds on Sunday (6).
