The Hambantota Industrial Zone (HIZ) will be shifted to some other part of the country if there is opposition to it, Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe said yesterday.   99

In response to a question asked by the joint opposition he said the President had told him that the zone could be set up in Polonnaruwa if not in Hambantota.

“Even ministers Lakshman Kiriella and S.B. Dissanayake had requested that industrial zones be set up in Kandy or in Nuwara Eliya” the Prime Minister said.

He said the former president should inform the government in writing that he and his supporters are opposed to the move. The Premier said if such a letter was submitted, the government would be willing to re-think about the Hambantota Zone.
“The former president has actually welcomed the move to set up the industrial zone when he visited China recently,” he said adding that Mr. Rajapaksa had informed China during his recent visit that he welcomed the move to set up such a zone in Hambantota.

The Premier said land in Hambantota would be taken over for the proposed industrial zone only on the recommendation of the committee appointed to look into this matter.

He told joint opposition group leader Dinesh Gunawardane that the committee headed by Sagala Ratnayake and Chamal Rajapaksa includes Ministers Mahinda Amaraweera and Sajith Premadsa.

He said all agreements in connection with the project will be presented to the House so that it could be debated and last Saturday’s clash in Hambantota would be debated no sooner the police submits its report.
