PHU General Secretary and MP Udaya Gammanpila said according to the Constitution it was mandatory for the government to declare elections after its term ends.

“The opposition will nominate its common candidate when elections are announced. The person selected will be a surprise to all and sundry,” he said.

The MP said as of now it appears that the SLFP would nominate President Maithripala Sirisena while UNP would nominate Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe as presidential candidates.

“The President is the head of the government while the Prime Minister is his deputy and as such both of them are equally responsible for the damage they are causing to the country,” he said.
