01Integrating SL, India, Singapore: PM

In an interview with NDTV, Prime Minister Ranil  Wickremesinghe disclosed plans to create an economic region integrating  Sri Lanka, the five southern states of India and Singapore. 

The Premier, who is in Switzerland to attend the Davos  Economic Forum, said discussions have already begun for the project with  the Economic and Technological Cooperation Agreement (ETCA) with India  scheduled to be signed this year.  


“Our intention is to create a platform for value addition  and logistics in Sri Lanka.

We will come into more agreements with  Singapore, China, the ASEAN, Japan and Bangladesh,” he said on  Wednesday.

He said Sri Lanka also is in talks with India to develop Trincomalee harbour as the main harbour for the Bay of Bengal.  
He said once the plans are done, Japan will also take a  stake in the harbour. “This is something which will happen. There is no  sunken cost and we don’t require any breakwater,” he said on Wednesday.  

He said the intention of the Sri Lankan is to create a  platform for value addition and logistics in Sri Lanka. “We will come  into more agreements with Singapore, China, the ASEAN, Japan and  Bangladesh,” he said.   
Commenting on bilateral relationships, he said people to  people relationship with India gets on well as well as government to  government relationships.   

“Sri Lanka knows how to maintain its independence, how to  look after its friendship with India and the rest of the world,” he  said.
