The employees of the Gampaha District Secretariat and the Gampaha Divisional Secretariat boycotted duties yesterday as a protest against the malicious statements allegedly made by Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake against the Divulapitiya Divisional Secretary.

They participated in a protest march through the Gampaha town carrying posters and placards and later assembled near the Gampaha railway station shouting slogans. They urged the Government to secure the independence of the public service.

The Ven. Yakkaduwe Rahula Thera the coordinator of Buddhist activities in the Gampaha Divisional Secretariat said public servants should not cow down to threats and intimidation by politicians and urged the President to initiate action in this regard. The Thera said this type of action by the likes of the deputy minister was the result of mixing politics with acting.

In a show of solidarity, the employees of the divisional secretariats of Divulapitiya, Mirigama and Negombo also boycotted duties and marched through the respective towns shouting slogans, carrying placards and condemning the deplorable action of Deputy Minister Ranjan Ramanayake.
