Health authorities in the Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia Municipal Council, that launched a raid in Ratmalana on Sunday, arrested six individuals for haphazard disposal of garbage collected from houses and business premises.

Municipal Commissioner Dhammika Mutugala said unscrupulous individuals left bags of garbage in public places and by the roadside, regardless of its health hazard and damage to the outlook of the city.

He said the municipality’s health department would carry out continual raids to arrest the individuals responsible for this despicable practice.

Meanwhile, Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Indika Ellawala who commented on this concern said two out of six individuals who were charged legally evaded court.

The four suspects who pleaded guilty were fined Rs. 10,000 each, he said, adding that open warrants were issued for the arrest of the two absconding suspects.

However, Dr. Ellawala requested the public to hand over garbage to the dumpsters of the municipal council and to refrain from throwing them on the roadside.

A team of PHIs have been deployed to carry out continual raids around the area day in and day out, he added.
