Elections Commission (EC) chairman, Mahinda Deshapriya said yesterday that it seemed that the holding of elections for local government bodies was being delayed.  DM_20170210_A001-10

“First it was announced that the polls would be held before April and then before June. Therefore, it seems the process of holding the elections is getting delayed gradually,” he said.

He expressed these views after a group of Joint Opposition MPs met him over the delay in the holding of elections for local government bodies.    Mr. Deshapriya said that after the relevant gazette notifications were issued, the EC could take immediate measures to hold the LG polls.    “Due to the delay in preparing the gazette notifications, we have given an entire month for preparations,” he said.    He said the delimitation report would be gazetted by next Wednesday and the other gazette notifications would be received before February 21.    The EC hopes the government leaders who are responsible for making these reports and gazettes would provide them on time, he said.
