President Maithripala Sirisena has reportedly decided to be more assertive in the Government’s policy-making process by being involved in the affairs of the Cabinet Committee on Economic Management, which is currently headed by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe, it is learnt.DM_20170213_A001-42

The policy decisions related to economic development is mainly taken by this committee, comprising Ministers from both the United National Party (UNP) and the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP). Currently, it has 
weekly meetings.   


However, the President has decided to meet with the committee every fortnight hereafter.  

 
Recently, Central Bank Governor Indrajit Coomaraswamy briefed the committee on economic hardships that lay ahead for the Government, particularly in debt repayment.   


According to him, the Government was slated to have a difficult time for the next three years, at least. He made his presentation last week.   


Meanwhile, the President will also meet the committee to decide on actions to be taken regarding the current economic challenges.
