Residents as well as hundreds of visitors who toured the Panadura town expressed concern about the inconveniences they faced due to poor sanitary facilities.
They pointed out that pavement hawkers carried out their businesses obstructing pavements and stormwater drains, and that they haphazardly disposed garbage by the roadside.
However, both the SLTB and private bus stands are not maintained properly. The toilets in the SLTB bus stand have been left in a state of disrepair for prolonged years despite continual public complaints.
Meanwhile, a former member of the Urban Council stated that maintenance facilities in the town had now been neglected for want of public representation in the council.
He said if local elections were held and representatives elected, then they could have looked into the maintenance of the town.
However, the residents of the area pointed out that the garbage problem and the dilapidated condition of the market building existed since long. Thus they requested relevant authorities to save the Panadura town from turning into an eyesore.
