In response to remarks made by the SLFP that it would contest the election with the Joint Opposition next time, former Minister G.L. Peiris said his side was not ready to be tricked for the second time.
Talking on behalf of the Joint opposition, he said his side had repeatedly said this. “We are not willing to be tricked for the second time. At the parliamentary election in 2015, former President Mahinda Rajapaksa of the Joint Opposition conducted the whole campaign. If not for President Maithripala Sirisena’s intervention at the last minute saying that Mr. Rajapaksa would not be appointed as the Prime Minister and sacking the two secretaries, we would have definitely secured 113 seats,” Prof. Peiris said.
He said, “With the bitter experience of the recent past staring us in the face, we are certainly not prepared to run the race.”
