The Joint Opposition made a fresh engagement with Speaker Karu Jayasuriya yesterday requesting recognition as the main opposition, its officials said yesterday.

LATE-CITY--DM-1-34 Its parliamentary group leader Dinesh Gunawardane told Daily Mirror that, though his team had 51 seats in the House, it had been denied both the Opposition Leader’s post and the Chief Opposition Whip’s post.

He said the two parties holding these positions had only 22 seats.

In addition, he said, his side had been discriminated against in the allotment of time for speeches in the House. “We pointed these out to the Speaker today,” he said.
