The government has agreed to do away with the controlled- price for sugar following requests made by the importers of essential food commodities, a spokesman said yesterday.

The Cost of Living Committee, chaired by President Maithripala Sirisena, has taken this decision the other day.

A spokesman for the Association of Importers of Essential Commodities told the Daily Mirror that the government imposed a controlled price of Rs.93 a kilo for sugar in the retail market, but it was difficult to make sales at that rate.

“We sought to do away with it and it was agreed. The relevant gazette notification will be released later,” he said.

Also, the spokesman said his associations asked the government not to declare two controlled prices for local and imported rice varieties, but it was not heeded.
