Former minister Renuka Herath passes away

Renuka Herath, a senior member of the United National Party (UNP), a former Health Minister and the current Opposition Leader of the Central Provincial Council, passed away on Sunday night after a brief illness. 

She was 72 years of age and was undergoing treatment at the Kandy General Hospital at the time of her death. She was the Opposition Leader of the Central Provincial Council.   

She first entered politics in 1977 being elected to Parliament and later served as a minister in the J. R. Jayewardene government. She was re-elected to Parliament in 1989 and became the Minister of Health in the R. Premadasa government. Ms. Herath was re-elected in 1994 but lost her seat in 2000 and 2001. She returned to Parliament in 2004 in the wake of the then minister S.B. Dissanayake losing his seat after being sentenced to jail.   

Her funeral will take place on Thursday at Walapane.
