A warrant was yesterday issued for the arrest of Ven. Uduwe Dhammaloka Thera as he was not present in Court in a case in which he was charged with causing noise pollution between 5.00 a.m. and 6.00 a.m. by using loudspeakers to broadcast Pirith and other religious recitals at his Alan Mathiniyaramaya Vihare in Polhengoda.

jhFour residents of the area had filed a complaint in Colombo Chief Magistrate’s Court that they were exposed to high noise levels from the loudspeakers belonging to the temple.

The monk is said to have travelled abroad after obtaining permission from the High Court in another case but had failed to obtain permission from the Magistrate in connection with this case.

The complainants said the exposure to such high levels of noise pollution constituted a health risk and that there were sufficient scientific evidence to prove it. They requested Court to prevent the Temple from exposing them to such noise pollution.
The complainants said they were badly affected both physical and mentally.

They said they had informed the temple’s chief incumbent the Ven. Dhammaloka Thera on several occasions but no action had been taken in mitigation.

The complaint was filed by Gavinda Jayasinghe, Dr. Kalinga Kaluperuma, Diren R. Halok, Milinda Moragoda and Kamalesh Johnpulle citing Ven. Dhammaloka Thera as the respondent seeking court to order the removal of the nuisance.
