It is revealed that customs officers were being forced by a higher ranking customs officer to release a 40 foot container carrying illegal cigarettes worth around Rs.500 million, reliable Customs sources said.
The source confirmed the container was held at the Customs Revenue Task Force (RTF) and customs officials were allegedly forced to release the container treating it as one laden with ordinary goods. The container was imported from Italy, the sources said.
When contacted Customs media spokesman Dharmasena Kahandawa said such a container had been held at the Customs RTF and it had not been inspected yet and was not identified as carrying cigarettes yet.
