The Colombo High Court yesterday observed that Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne was not wrong in remanding UPFA MP Wimal Weerawansa on charges of misusing 40 vehicles of the State Engineering Corporation (SEC) and causing a huge loss to the State from 2011 to 2014.

High Court Judge Wikum Kaluarachchi said this when delivering his order on the bail revision application seeking the HC to overrule the Fort Magistrate’s remand order.   The Judge dismissed the arguments presented by defence counsel Gamini Marapone PC who challenged the Magistrate’s remand order claiming that she had faulted when remanding Mr. Weerawansa.

The counsel said that the Magistrate had not given any reasons for remanding the suspect and that the remand order had violated the Constitution.

Senior State Counsel Lakmini Girihagama appeared for the prosecution while Counsel Gamini Marapone PC with Navin Marapone appeared for the suspect.
