BIA returns to normal

The newly-renovated main runway of the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake will be commissioned on Thursday, April 6, the Civil Aviation and Transport Ministry said yesterday. 


 It said the first aircraft to land on the newly-commissioned runway would be by SriLankan airlines newly-purchased aircraft flight UL1162.   

The runway was closed for renovations from January 6 between 8.30 a.m. to 4.30 p.m. and was
renovated at an estimated cost of US$50 million with the 75-metre wide runway now being open for use by A380 aircraft.
The ministry said the renovations were carried out by Netherlands with the runway fitted with LED lighting systems enabling it to operate even under severe weather conditions.

The renovated runway will be commissioned by Transport Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva and Deputy Minister Ashok Abeysinghe.  
The ministry said new terminals would be constructed   under phase II of the project,which was scheduled to 
begin in July.
