The Quality Assurance and Accreditation Bill, which was meant to establish a new independent authority to accredit and monitor the quality of higher education in Sri Lanka, will be presented in parliament shortly, Higher Education and Highways Minister Lakshman Kiriella said yesterday.

He said the Bill had been sent to the Attorney General’s Department for drafting and that it would be presented in Parliament soon after it was received.

The minister said the World Bank was funding the project and that they were currently doing a study on this matter.

UGC Vice Chairman P.S.M. Gunaratne said the new authority would do an institutional and programme review periodically to maintain the quality of the universities.

“The government universities, private universities and cross border institutions will be regulated under this authority and  the programmes offered will also be reviewed
periodically,” he said.
