The Kesbewa Magistrate yesterday granted permission to the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) to dump the garbage collected from Colombo at Karadiyana in Piliyandala on a temporary basis.

Western Province Waste Management Authority Chairman Ruvini Dharmasiri said the ruling was based on a request made to dump 350 metric tonnes of garbage at Karadiyana from April 17 to April 28. Ms. Dharmasiri said the dumping of the garbage would be monitored by the officials of the Waste Management Authority and the CMC.

“We expect more than 130 tractor and lorry loads of garbage at Karadiyana daily. We will not let them dump more than 350 metric tonnes,” she said.

Police have also been deployed at the complex to control any possible tense situations.

Meanwhile, CMC Commissioner V.K. Anura told Daily Mirror the CMC would dump garbage not only at Karadiyana but also at several other places.

However, he refused to reveal the exact locations saying it would provoke the residents who opposed this move.

Earlier, the Government said it would use Karadiyana and Dompe on a temporary basis for dumping of garbage collected in Colombo.
