Fisheries Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said yesterday it was not the government that was affected by the strikes launched by trade unions, but the innocent people who suffered due to their arbitrary actions.   DM_20170505_A001-13

He told parliament that these strikes would be beneficial for the government as medicines, air-conditioners, water, electricity and other facilities would not be in use during the strike, but innocent people would have to suffer the consequences. He requested all trade unions to think twice before resorting to strike action as it negatively impacted the lives of innocent people. He requested them instead to engage in discussions to get their issues resolved. “They should enter into discussions about their issues. I would not say they should not strike. Resort to trade union action as a last resort is all I am saying,” he said. He said rich people and politicians would not be affected by the strike but innocent people who depended on government services would be affected. “Rich people and politicians could afford to be treated at private hospitals. It is the poor that suffer the consequences of strikes,” he said.
