Devotees who received free packets of rice offered by various organizations had polluted the premises of Sri Dalada Maligawa with the wrappers and left over food. In lieu of Vesak, these organisations had come forward to hand out about 25,000 packets of rice to devotees.

The area surrounding the Dalada Maligawa was seen littered with waste and looked like animals had eaten there.

Although boards had been put up to educate the public depicting messages such as ‘The environment is sacred.’ Environment should be kept clean’ etc. those visiting the holy area had not taken much notice of them. The situation had been exacerbated as a result of the garbage collection by the Kandy Municipal Council getting delayed as well.
