Thilina stars as Sri Lanka down Philippines

Sri Lanka opened their Asian Rugby Championship Division I campaign with a 24-13 win against Philippines yesterday in Ipoh Padang Ipoh, Malaysia.   


Sri Lanka scored four penalties, a goal and a try and led 11-00 at half time. Philippines scored a penalty and two tries.   


Thilina Wijesinghe scored all four penalties for Sri Lanka — in the 4th, 40th, 62nd and 78th minutes respectively — with centre Dhanushka Ranjan, Richard Dharmapala touching down for tries.


Dhanushka Ranjan scored a trade mark try brushing aside several defenders in the 16th minute of the first half. Thereafter it was Richard Dharmapala who put finishing touches to a move initiated by skipper Roshan Weeraratne in the 25th minute of the second half. Wijesinghe added the extra points.   


For Philippines Kevin Gordon put over the penalty, with Ricky Lucia and Justin Coveney scoring their two tries.   


Malaysia overcome UAE
In another game of the same tournament played yesterday , hosts Malaysia overcame United Arab Emirates by 36 points to 22.
