Principals of schools in the flood stricken areas had been entrusted with the discretionary authority to decide on closing their schools if need be, an official of the Ministry of Education said.

“The Minister of Education has instructed the Principals that they should consider any possible danger to their schools and take this decision,” the official said.

However, they were required to inform the Regional Director or the Zonal Director of Education in case of a provincial school and the Director of National Schools in case of a National School regarding their decision, he said.

Meanwhile, Minister of Education Akila Viraj Kariyawasam called for an immediate report on school children affected by the disaster to provide them with urgent relief and to issue school uniforms, text books and other school requisites in place of those destroyed in the disaster.
