Amid speculation that the government is attempting to postpone provincial council elections, which are to be held this year, a collective of poll observers have sought a meeting with the Elections Commission to discuss action to be taken in such an eventuality.

The poll observers including PAFFREL CaFFE, CMEV, MFFE and DML are said to have written to the Commission.

The elections are due to the North-Central, Eastern and Sabaragamuwa Provincial Councils this year. According to reports the government has initiated internal discussions to postpone the elections by way of fresh legislation.

The term of office of the three PCs expires in September. However, the government is said to be attempting to postpone the elections till the end of the term of office of the remaining six PCs. The government is keen to hold the elections to all the nine PCs on a single day.
