President to order forces to release details of missing persons

President Maithripala Sirisena on a visit to Jaffna yesterday assured that he would order the Tri- forces to release details of those who surrendered and those arrested by the forces during the last phase of the war and the recent past.

“This will pave way to obtain information about the victims of enforced disappearances in all the eight districts in the North and East,”the President said.   


He said that a solution would be evolved in relation to the issue of the victims of enforced disappearance, to their relatives.   


The campaign launched by the relatives of the missing persons in front of the Kilinochchi Kandasamy Kovil reached its 100th day on May 30th and the demonstrators placed a blockade of the A-9 Road to draw attention to their protest.    The President who had earlier made contact with the protestors through the North-East Governor had informed that he would meet them in two weeks.   


Meanwhile the President who made a visit to Jaffna yesterday to look into the issue of the missing persons under enforced circumstances, held discussions at the Jaffna District Secretariat and the office of the NPC Governor. He then pledged that he would consider the demands of relatives of victims and take swift action.   


The President said that he would meet the senior officials of the Tri-forces during  the National Security Council meeting in Colombo and would order them to release the details of those who surrendered or those arrested by the armed forces at various time period, in order to obtained information about the victims of enforced disappearances.   


However the relatives of the missing persons said they would continue their struggle till they received information with regard to their kith and kin as no solution had been evolved so far.     


The campaign of the relatives had reached 113 days in Kilinochchi, 109 days in Vavuniya, 97 days in Mullaithivu and 90 days in Maruthankerny, it was pointed out.
