Government had decided to allocate a sum of Rs.1.5 billion for a project meant to take Colombo City’s garbage to Puttalam to be disposed of there, informed sources said.

This decision had been made by President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe after speaking to all the stake holders involved in the garbage crisis.“Garbage will be dumped in an area which comprises of quarries containing limestone which is used to produce cement,” sources revealed. They added that garbage disposal machinery would be utilized in the process to avoid any environmental hazard.

Garbage collection and disposal in the City of Colombo has become a serious issue lately in the light of the tragedy that took place in Meethotamulla in April this year.
