Deegadanthu shot and injured

The tusker, popularly known as Deegadanthu in the Kalawewa National Park had sustained gunshot injuries, Wildlife Conservation Officers said.

They said that the tusker was frequenting Galgodathalawa in Mirihampitigama in the National Park and that it had been shot at on its legs.  Officers of the Galkiriyagama Wildlife Office have taken steps to provide treatment to the tusker and informed about the injured elephant to the North Western Zone Wildlife Veterinary Unit.


Range Wildlife Conservator D. Ramaishe said the gun shots could have been caused by a poacher or a trap gun.
