The Sri Lanka Cricket Team will have a new captain for the forthcoming one-off Test match against Zimbabwe which will be worked off at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo from July 14 to 18 and also for the full series against India thereafter.

According to the highly placed sources in Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) Board, the current Captain Angelo Mathews is likely to be asked to step down gracefully and if he does not do so, he will be replaced by the National Cricket Selectors.

The Cricket Committee of the SLC is in talks with the Selection Committee Headed by Sanath Jayasuriya and the formal announcement is likely to be made any time soon.

“We have three candidates in mind and the Board will announce the new captain among these three,” the source added.
“Whoever is appointed captain for the only Test against Zimbabwe, will also lead the side for the three-Test matches against India commencing in Galle on July 26.

The decision to replace Mathews has been taken after the teams’ poor performance against the low-ranked visiting Zimbabwe Team, which the home side lost poorly.

“It (the loss) is one of the lowest points in my career,” Skipper Mathews said after the defeat in the fifth and final ODI played at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota on Monday.
