High Court re-summons Prez and PM

The Colombo High Court yesterday re-summoned President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to appear in court on December 4 to give evidence in a case where Tissa Attenayake is charged with displaying a forged document.

High Court Judge Vickum Kaluarachchi also issued summons on the 10th and 11th witnesses who were not present in court when the case was taken up for hearing yesterday.   


The 4th, 5th, 6th, 7th, 8th, 9th, 12th and 15th witnesses who were present in court were asked to be present on the next case date to give evidence in this case. 


Mr. Attanayake was charged with displaying a fraudulent document to the media during the 2015 presidential election with the intention of inducing voters to vote for the then president Mahinda Rajapaksa who was contesting the then common opposition candidate Maithripala Sirisena. Mr. Attanayake was indicted by the Attorney General on charges of displaying the fraudulent document outlining a secret agreement between Mr. Sirisena and UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.   


Senior State Counsel Lakmini Girihagama appeared for the prosecution on behalf of the AG while Kalinga Indatissa PC appeared for Mr. Attanayake. and Nissanka Nanyakkara PC appeared for the President and the Prime Minister.
