The government has referred the proposal for the revision of the electoral system for the provincial councils to the Attorney General, it is learnt.

Earlier, the Cabinet of Ministers approved a memorandum by Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe to enact legislation providing for a change in the electoral system on conducting the polls for all nine provincial councils on the same day.

The matter has now been referred to the Attorney General for a decision on how to proceed in drafting legislation in this regard.
It is proposed to elect 60 per cent of members under the First Past the Post System and the rest under the Proportional Representation System.
