The National Selectors yesterday recalled middle-order batsman Lahiru Thirimanne for the Second Test against India which begins on Thursday (3), after a year since his last appearance for Sri Lanka.

Thirimanne is one of two changes to the squad with wrist-spinner Lakshan Sandakan being included in place of Suranga Lakmal and the other change sees the return of Test Captain Dinesh Chandimal, who was ruled for the series opener with pneumonia.

Having played in the Test series in England last June, Thirimanne was exiled to domestic cricket and scored a half-century against the Indians in the warm-up match ahead of the First Test which concluded in Galle.

Thirimanne will be vying for the place left vacant by the injured Asela Gunaratne, who had been ruled out of the series with a fractured wrist.

Also in the running for that position is Dhananjaya de Silva, who has been unlucky to miss out despite a productive season in 2016.
Meanwhile, Sri Lankan Chief Selector Sanath Jayasuriya backed his team to bounce back at the SSC Grounds, recalling India’s turnaround during the previous series in 2015.

“India did come back the last time they were here, after losing in Galle. This is cricket, and if we apply ourselves and want (to come back) then we can,”

“This is something we proved last year when we beat Australia, then world’s number one Test Team, 3-0 when they were here. It wasn’t a one-off win because we can’t win three Tests in a row without playing well.

“So, our players are capable. We need to give them lot of confidence,” said the former star all-rounder.
