The Supreme Court had held that the Government could go ahead with the Provincial Council Elections Amendment Bill as those, who filed a petition on the Bill earlier, had decided not to pursue the legal action they had initiated earlier on the legislation.

Speaker Karu Jayasuriya announced that the Supreme Court had held that the Government could go-ahead with the Bill as per Section 12(4) of the Constitution.

The amendment provided provisions to ensure that 35 percent of the members of a Provincial Council were women.
