Jayasekara to MS, RW:

By Sandun A Jayasekera

Cabinet Co-spokesman and Sports Minister Dayasiri Jayasekara yesterday said there are several other ministers who violate the collective responsibility of the Cabinet and in his opinion the President and the Prime Minister will have to take a decision on them also.

Responding to a journalist at yesterday’s weekly Cabinet meeting, Minister Jayasekara said it was improper to criticize Cabinet decisions outside of the Cabinet.

“Being a two party coalition government, you may have many ideas on a government project. When a project proposal is in front of the Cabinet you are free to come up with your suggestions and reservations. But after the Cabinet takes a decision on you are bound to abide by that decision and you cannot criticize the Cabinet decision thereafter,” Minister Jayasekara stressed.

He said even he has been criticized unfairly sometimes by his own colleagues for something he had not done.

Minister Jayasekara said a group of government back-benchers had decided to draw the attention of President Sirisena and Prime Minister Wickremesinghe about the ever increasing tension and put an end to the exchange of brickbats between then two main parties of the Yahapalana Government.

This animosity is not healthy for the Yahapalana Government as we expect to govern the country until 2020. Therefore, it is the responsibility of the UNP and the SLFP to go forward with a mutual understanding, friendship and respect. If the members of two parties continue to criticize each other we will bring it to the notice of the hierarchy of the two parties, Minister Jayasekara stressed.
