The officials of the Health Department of the Colombo Municipality inspected a large number of mobile food stalls at the Galle Face Green during the kite festival held last week.

The food items found unsuitable for human consumption had been destroyed by the officials and vendors who  were found violating food safety regulations had been issued strict warnings.

“Some of the vendors who sold food items in open containers exposing them to dust. They were instructed to cover up food items while all vendors were told to use gloves and masks when handling food,” the department said.

It said there were some 80 stalls at the kite festival with vendors who sell food items such as ice cream and snacks to the large crowd that gathered at the Galle Face.

The raid to streamline food stalls had been conducted by a team of Health Department officials led by PHI Kumarasiri and Food Inspector Wickramathilaka under the instructions of Colombo Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ruwan Wijayamuni.
