Holding LG Polls this year:

By Yohan Perera

New issues are beginning to emerge over the holding of local government elections in December this year with the Commissioner of Examinations informing the Elections Commission Chairman that polls should not be held on around December 9.

An official from the Elections Commission said the Commissioner of Examinations had informed the Polls Commission that logistics would have to be prepared for the GCE Ordinary Level examination at least by December 9, 2017 though the examination starts on December 12 this year.

Meanwhile it was reported earlier that Local Government and Provincial Councils Minister Faizer Musthapa had informed the Cabinet that the elections could be held only if the Municipal Ordinance, Urban Council Ordinance and Pradeshiya Sabha Ordinance were amended. He has said that these legislations would have to be amended in order to allow the appointment of additional members to local bodies under the new amendment in the Local Government Election Amendment Bill under which 40 per cent of the members to local bodies are elected under the ward system.
