Accident in Polonnaruwa claims two lives

A brother of President Maithripala Sirisena had been arrested by the Polonnaruwa Police in connection with a fatal accident, which killed two persons when a cab collided head-on with a motorcycle at Athumalpitiya in Polonnaruwa on Saturday morning.


The suspect,  Nanasiri Pagnaratne Sirisena, also know as Lal Sirisena was remanded till September 11 by Polonnaruwa Acting Magistrate Ruwan Kumara Mapa.


The Police said the 44-year-old pillion rider died after being admitted to the Polonnaruwa Hospital on Saturday morning while the 59-year-old motorcycle rider who was undergoing treatment at the Hospital succumbed to his injuries on Saturday evening.

The deceased, Jayaratne Banda and Jayasekera Mudiyanselage Buddhadasa, residents of Hingurakgoda were identified as brothers.  They had met with the accident while on their way home from Polonnaruwa Hospital.
The Police said the cab had fled the scene without stopping and later the driver was arrested when he had surrendered to the Police at the Polonnaruwa Police Station.

The Polonnaruwa Police are investigating on the instructions of SSP Polonnaruwa Division Laksiri Wijesena.
