The proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution was yesterday approved by the Sabaragamuwa Provincial Council (SPC) with 29 councillors voting in favour and eight voting against.

SPC Chief Minister Maheepala Herath submitted four amendments to the draft when it was tabled by Council Chairman Kanchana Jayaratna.

Media spokesman Denzil Weerasuriya said the proposed 20th Amendment to the Constitution which provides for elections to be held to the nine provincial councils on a single day was approved in the council with the amendments.

Fourteen UNP councillors, 13 UPFA councillors and two members of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress voted in favour of the draft while eight joint opposition councillors voted against. Mr. Weerasuriya said three councillors were absent while three others refrained from voting.
