The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Workers’ Union yesterday launched their strike action in front of the CEB Head Office, Colombo despite the CEB issuing a circular cancelling leave of all employees.

Speaking to Daily Mirror the (CEB) Workers’ Union said the strike action which launched yesterday noon demanding the authorities to reimburse the money defrauded by the administrative officers and the revision of the salary ratio from 1:6 to 1:9 was successful.
They said a ‘Thovil’ was held and 200 coconuts were dashed in front of the CEB Head Office.

“All the employees except engineers in every CEB office joined the trade union action. We will continue our strike till Friday (15) and we hope the authorities will provide a favourable response to our demands by Friday noon. If we fail to receive any response we will continue our strike indefinitely,” the Union said.

They said they have the right to resort to any trade union action, however the authorities attempted to suppress our demands.
The salary scales of administrative officers at the CEB were increased on numerous occasions, but the salary scale of lower level employees had remained unchanged, they said.

During the strike no repair work would be carried in the case of a breakdown or power failure except at government hospitals.
Though all the leave of all CEB employees were cancelled until September 20, we will continue our strike.   “Leave was cancelled by the ministry due to service requirement and we are not paying any consideration on that” they said.
