“All future polls will be electorate-based”

Untitled-1President Maithripala Sirisena has said the government hopes to hold the general elections and the elections to the provincial councils based on electorates known as first-past-the-post system instead of the preferential voting systems.

  

 

  • I am  happy to see the introduction of the electorate-based voting system
  • It fulfills the people’s expectations under my leadership, despite protests by some
  • This is a victory for the people irrespective of their different political views

 

He said this on Saturday when he met the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) members of the North-Central Provincial Council SLFP members to discuss ways of strengthening the party and leading it to victory at future elections and about the concerns faced by the NCPC   


The President said the much criticised preferential voting system had resulted in politicians working for their selfish agendas and personal gain leaving the country and the people in the doldrums. The President said he was happy to see the introduction of the electorate-based voting system fulfilling the people’s expectation under his leadership, despite protests by disgruntled factions. “This is a victory for the people irrespective of their different political views,” he said.

The president said he would take all necessary measures to create a new political culture which was a major promise made to the people during 2015 presidential election.
