Former Deputy Minister of Tourism Promotion and Christian Affairs Arundika Fernando, who was sacked recently, yesterday announced that he had joined the joint opposition and said that he would work towards toppling the present government.

Addressing his inaugural JO press conference at the Vajirashrama Temple, Punchi Borella yesterday, Mr. Fernando vowed that he would do whatever it takes to bring down the government as an opposition member.

He said that he would make a written request to the Speaker of the House on Tuesday (19) to allow him to be seated in the opposition side of the House.“I don’t want to hold a ministerial portfolio in the present government again.

I was removed as I was ready to vote against the 20th Amendment,” he said.

Also he revealed that some United National Party (UNP) backbenchers and some Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) members were also keen to go over to the joint opposition in the near future.    Meanwhile, former State Minister of Local Government and Provincial Councils Piyankara Jayaratne, who resigned from his portfolio in December 2016 and sat as an independent member in Parliament earlier, also pledged his allegiance to the joint opposition yesterday.
