‘Sil redi’ case

By Yoshitha Perera

Former presidential secretary Lalith Weeratunga and TRC’s former director general Anusha Palpita, who were sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment, were yesterday released on bail by Colombo High Court Judge Gihan Kulatunga.

They were each released on a cash bail of Rs.100,000 with three sureties of Rs.1 million each and their passports impounded.

When the case was taken up in the Colombo High Court, President’s Counsel Kalinga Indatissa appearing for the two accused requested Court to release the two convicts on bail under exceptional circumstances.

He informed Court that his clients could be released on bail considering the lightness of their sentences and their health conditions.
Their medical reports were produced in Court.

The two bail applications were filed in the Colombo High Court on September 13.

They were sentenced to three years rigorous imprisonment after being found guilty of misappropriating Rs.600 million belonging to the TRC and using it to distribute ‘Sil Redi’ during the 2015 presidential election campaign.
