The seven accused including the main accused ‘Swiss Kumar’, found guilty of the charge of abducting, gang-raping and murdering Jaffna student Sivaloganathan Vidya, were yesterday sentenced to death by a three-Judge Bench of the Jaffna High Court. 

Two other suspects who turned state witnesses were acquitted. 

The Jaffna High Court also sentenced the seven convicts to 30 years rigorous imprisonment and ordered them to pay Rs.1 million each as compensation to Vidya’s family and fined Rs.40,000 each while the 4th and 9th accused were each fined Rs.70,000.

In the event of the nonpayment of the compensation, Court ordered that their term of imprisonment would be further extended.

The defence counsel said they would appeal against the death sentence. 

A large crowd including Vidya’s parents and her relatives were present in the Jaffna High Court to hear the verdict.   

The Court findings consisting of 332 pages was read out by the Tribunal President and Vavuniya High Court Judge Shashi Mahendran. The other judges were Jaffna High Court Judge Manikkawasagar Illancheliyan and Trincomalee High Court Judge Annalingam Prem Shankar.

The nine accused were — Mahalingam Shashikumar alias Swiss Kumar, Poobalasigham Indrakumar alias Sinnappah, Poobalasingham Jeyakumar alias Ravi, Poobalasingham Navakumar alias Senthil, Mahalingam Shashidaran alias Shashi, Pillainathan Chandrakashan alias Chandra, Shivadevan Kushanthan alias Periyathamby, Palani Roopasingham Kuganathan alias Nishanthan and Jayadaran Kokilan alias Kanga.
