The Hambantota Magistrate’s Court yesterday issued a restraining order preventing protests by MP Namal Rajapaksa, D.V. Upul and others in the vicinity of the Hambantota Port, Indian Consulate and the roads leading to the Hambantota Port today.

Police spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said the Hambantota Magistrate’s Court issued the order after the Police petitioned court of protests scheduled to be held today against the agreements signed over the development of the Hambantota Port and Mattala Airport involving foreign countries.

He said the Magistrate has also ordered protesters to refrain from causing damages to any property.

Meanwhile, MP Namal Rajapaksa said they would respect the court order and engage in a peaceful protest.

“We will respect the court order and protest  peacefully in order to protect Mattala airport and our national assets  from being privatized”, he tweeted.
