Namal, Chanaka, Prasanna, Kodikara arrested

Joint Opposition Parliamentarian Namal Rajapaksa and five other politicians were arrested by a special police team in Hambantota last night over their alleged involvement in leading a protest disregarding a court order. 

They were later remanded by the Hambantota Magistrate till October 16.


Amongst the arrested were three Parliamentarians including Namal Rajapaksa, D. V. Chanaka and Prasanna Ranaweera along with Western Provincial Councillor Upali Kodikara, Southern Provincial Councillor Sampath Athukorala and former Provincial Councillor Ajith Prasanna.   


Police Spokesman SP Ruwan Gunasekara said a special team of the Hambantota Police had arrested the politicians when they were summoned to record a statement at the station yesterday afternoon. 

 
SP Gunasekara who was in Hambantota last night spoke to the Daily Mirror prior to producing the six suspects before the Hambantota Magistrate at his residence. SSP Elpitiya Division W. Thalduwa, who is conducting the investigations on behalf of SP Tangalle Division said that the arrests were made in the evening. The police have so far arrested 34 persons excluding the six politicians for disregarding a court order of holding a protest and behaving in an unlawful violent manner outside the Indian Consulate Office in Hambantota last Friday.   


The JO-led procession of masses was protesting against government attempts of selling State property pertaining to Mattala Airport to an Indian company.   


The outcome of the magisterial decision of the six politicians who were produced last night was yet to be announced at the time this edition went to press.
